Alan Kotschwar


Sheriff Alan Kotschwar was born and raised in McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska. He attended school in McCook graduating from McCook High School and later graduated from McCook Community College. Sheriff Kotschwar has been involved with law enforcement for over 35 years.

Gene Mahon

Retired Sheriff

Gene stated his duties as Red Willow County Sheriff in 1987 and had only 3 staff members at the time. When he retired there were 18 employees at the RWCSO. Sheriff Mahon accepted possession of the Red Willow County Jail in December 2012. Under his direction, a 30 bed corrections center named Red Willow County Law Enforcement Center was opened in September, 2014. After a highly respected and impressive career with spanned 48 years, Sheriff Mahon retired in January 2015.

The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office is comprised of 6 certified law enforcement officers including the Sheriff, Chief Deputy and Lieutenant.  The four "road officers" are extensively trained in investigation, accident investigation, death scenes and many other facets of law enforcement. Officers are also called upon to perform title inspections, handle complaints, serve warrants, receive and serve civil process and sex offender registration. 

Certified Law Enforcement personnel must complete 20 hours of continuing education plus firearms recertification each year to maintain their certification. To become a certified law enforcement officer, you must be 21 years of age and attend the 16-week training at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, Nebraska within the first year after hire. 

In addition, the Sheriff’s Office has a support staff including the Office Manager, Administrative Assistant and Jail Administrator. On the Detention side of our organization we can house 30 inmates, both male and female adults. We have a staff of 12 jail staff working 12 hour shifts that are responsible for total inmate care. 

After an inmate is booked into our facility, they must be fed, given medical care and clothing, provided counseling, allowed physical exercise, transported to and from court, or transported to other facilities. They must be constantly on alert for dangerous situations.  They receive their primary training through cooperation with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Work Ethic Camp. They must complete continuing education every year to maintain their certification.  The Red Willow County Detention Center offers civilian fingerprinting from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday for a fee of $5.00 per card.
